Modified V-38 "Phantom" Assault Fighter

Phantom Fighter

After the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin, the Rebels proved that they were a serious threat to the Emperor's New Order. The Empire responded with new technology and weapons projects, such as the Dark Trooper and the Modified V-38 "Phantom" Assault Fighter. The Phantom Fighter research, under the direction of Admiral Sarn, was conducted in a part of the galaxy known as the Dreighton Triangle. The Dreighton Nebula had been the site of a major battle during the days of the Old Republic and was rumored to be haunted and a source of ships mysteriously disappearing. This provided perfect cover for development of a top-secret stealth starfighter. Phantom Fighters, or Tri-Fighters, pack slightly above normal firepower for a one-manned starfighter. However, the main improvement of the ship was the addition of a cloaking device. With a stealth shield in place, short and long range detectability of the ship was almost non-existent. Should the Phantom Fighter have gone into mass production, the Empire would certainly have had an upper hand. Sigma Squadron, the first wave of these deadly Tri-Fighters, came within mere hours of launch before the construction facility on the planet Imdaar was destroyed, along with Admiral Sarn's commandship, the Super Star Destroyer "Terror." The admiral was retired from active duty personally by Darth Vader. The rebel strike team, commanded by Ru Murleen, captured one of the precious vessels, but due to Imperial security fail-safe measures, the fighter was destroyed at a rebel base.
Years later, after the Battle of Hoth, the Empire set out to re-establish the Sigma Squadron with a plan code-named Operation: Claymore. The original fighter design blueprints and project data were waiting in the storage banks of the Imperial Intelligence Office on Coruscant. Operation: Claymore started off without incident until it seemed like the ghosts that were supposed to have haunted the nebula where the original project was hosted were now haunting this project. The first blow was the death of the Emperor and the destruction of the second Death Star. The second hit was the killing of Vice-Admiral Blazon, the project director, by a disgruntled bounty hunter. Sigma Squadron, which is captained by Baron Chequer, was placed in the eager hands of Colonel Tannin. To this day, Sigma Squadron has not seen any battle time, but there is much instore for the future...
